Summer Residential Governor’s School Academies

Greetings Sophomores and Juniors,
Applications are now open for the 2025 Summer Residential Governor’s School Academies. Please carefully review the attached information for a full description of the learning opportunities and expectations for each program. Students must be nominated by their school division to apply ̶ please contact Mrs. Anderson in the School Counseling office by Wednesday, October 30, 2024 if you are interested in being considered for nomination. Once nominated, you will begin the formal application process, which is described in the attachment links found above and throughout this document.
If nominated, applications and recommendations are due to the School Counseling office no later than Wednesday, December 11, 2024, unless otherwise indicated.
*Students should be identified as gifted or is an advanced student the division/school determines to be a competitive applicant.
World Language Academies
(Three-week programs)
Deadlines and Locations
French, German, and Spanish Full-Immersion Academies: June 21-July 12, 2025 at Washington & Lee University in Lexington, VA
Japanese and Latin Partial-Immersion Academies: June 22-July 13, 2025 at Randolph-Macon College in Ashland, VA
Foreign language Information:
*Spanish, German & French Academies: must have completed level 3 of the language prior to the beginning of the Academy
*Latin Academy: must have completed at least level two of Latin prior to the beginning of the Academy
*Japanese Academy: must have completed at least level two of ANY world language (not required to have previously studied Japanese)
*Language assessments are required in all languages except for students applying for Japanese with no prior experience.
*Language programs are not designed for students with native or near-native fluency in the target language (having lived in a country where the target language was spoken, previous full-immersion experiences such as some study abroad programs, the target language is spoken in the home or regularly in communication with members of the family). These factors could cause a candidate to be eliminated during the selection process. Sample Tests are available on the VDOE site for SRGS. *See website for full list of eligibility requirements for all programs.
Applications for any of the five Governor’s World Language Academies must be submitted online via the link below.
Student should begin World Language Academies applications asap, as there are several tasks to complete.

Information:
*Student must be genuinely interested in attending the Governor’s School and possess the emotional maturity, stability, and self-discipline to live away from home for an extended period.
*Must be a junior or sophomore during the 2024-2025 school year.
*Must rank at or above the 80th percentile on recent standardized test measures or have a letter of commendation from at least one teacher who believes the student would qualify on the academic criteria except for unusual situations or conditions.
*For Visual & Performing Arts, students must participate in a state-sponsored adjudication process. Date and Location forthcoming.
*Must not be a current applicant to a 2025 Governor’s Foreign Language Academy or other Summer residential, nor a former participant in these programs.
