File a FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid)
Complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) every year.
The FAFSA is available online at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov.
Login with your FSA ID.
This web application automatically prompts applicants to enter all required fields and questions any discrepant data. Renewal applicants may access their Renewal FAFSA at this site using their FSA ID.
IRS Data Retrieval Tool
Using the IRS Data Retrieval tool is highly recommended for submitting your financial information on the FAFSA if you filed taxes.
How to use the tool:
Go to www.fafsa.gov
Click the Login Button on the right side of the screen
Enter your information and click “Next”
Click on “Make Corrections to a Processed FAFSA”
Click on the “Financial Information” tab
Answer “Already Completed” to the question have your parents filed their IRS Income tax return, then by checking “None of the above” if that is accurate to the next question about the filing status, the “Link to IRS” button will appear. (If you cannot accurately check none of the above, you will need to submit an IRS Tax Transcript.)
Click on the “Link to IRS” button (you will be directed that you are leaving the FAFSA webpage).
Enter the information asked by the IRS page and then click “Transfer Now” to FAFSA.
