What is a College Adviser?

A college adviser provide one-on-one admissions and financial aid advice to any student or family from an assigned school.

Organize group events that encourage students and families to consider, plan for, and apply to college and universities.

Establish productive working relationships with principals, counselors, and teachers.

Represent the AmeriCorps program.

Effectively utilize tools and resources in pursuit of continuous improvement and outstanding service to students.

Maintain expertise in admissions and financial aid advising.

Summer Residential Governor’s School Academies

All applications and information can be downloaded from the VDOE website and must be typed.

Sophomores and Juniors,

Applications are now open for the 2023 Summer Residential Governor’s School Academies. Be sure to carefully review the attached information for a full description of the learning opportunities and expectations for each program. Students must be nominated by their school division to apply -- please contact Mrs. Anderson in the School Counseling office by November 3rd if you are interested in being considered for nomination. Once nominated, you can begin the formal application process, which is described in the attachment links found above and throughout this document. Applications are due to the School Counseling office on Wednesday, December 14, 2023, unless otherwise indicated. *Students should be identified as gifted.

World Language Academies

(Three-week programs)

Deadlines and Locations

French, German, and Spanish Academies: June 17-July 8, 2023 at Washington & Lee University in Lexington, VA

Japanese and Latin Academies: June 18-July 9, 2023 at Randolph-Macon College in Ashland, VA

Foreign language Information:

*Spanish, German, French Academies: must have completed level 3 of the language prior to the beginning of the Academy

*Latin Academy: must have completed at least level two of Latin prior to the beginning of the Academy

*Japanese Academy: must have completed at least level two of ANY world language (not required to have previously studied Japanese)

*Tests required in all languages except for students applying for Japanese with no prior experience

*The programs are not designed for students with native or near-native fluency in the target language (having lived in a country where the target language was spoken, previous full-immersion experiences such as some study abroad programs, the target language is spoken in the home or regularly in communication with members of the family). These factors could cause a candidate to be eliminated during the selection process. *See website for full list of eligibility requirements

All applications and recommendations must be typed.

If you are interested in one of the World language Academies, your typed application is due to the counseling office no later than Wednesday, December 7, 2023.

The 2023 four-week Academic programs are in the areas of Agriculture, Humanities, Mathematics, Science and Technology, JLAB Mentorship, Virginia Institute of Marine Science Mentorship and Visual and Performing Arts.

Mentorships (1. Engineering with Jefferson Lab, 2. Marine Science with VIMS)

*Visual and Performing Arts (1. Dance, 2. Instrumental Music, 3. Vocal Music, 4. Theatre, 5. Visual Arts) Students must rank at or above 80th percentile on recent standardized tests, or possess C average in last grade, or have a letter of recommendation from a teacher.

*Student must be genuinely interested in attending the Governor’s School and possess the emotional maturity, stability, and self-discipline to live away from home for an extended period.

*Must be a junior or sophomore during the 2022-2023 school year.

*Must rank at or above the 80th percentile on recent standardized test measures or possess a C average for the most recent grade completed or have a letter of commendation from at least one teacher who believes the student would qualify on the academic criteria except for unusual situations or conditions.

*For Visual & Performing Arts, students must participate in the state-sponsored adjudication process at Radford University, Saturday, January 21, 2023 (Covington Center for the Visual & Performing Arts). A fee will be charged if you do not attend your scheduled session. Please note that students may adjudicate in only one art area.

*Must not be a current applicant to a 2023 Governor’s Foreign Language Academy or other Summer residential, nor a former participant in these programs.
